David Zach Flash Video

David Zach is one of the few professionally trained futurists on this planet. That's because he earned a master's degree in Studies of the Future from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Of course, that was way back in 1981, so now it's pretty much a history degree. Today he's older, perhaps wiser, stands for more and falls for less. Dave has become the futurist with a past. As a futurist, Dave's worked with over 1400 associations, corporations and colleges offering insights on the personal and professional impact of strategic trends and traditions. In other words, he gives funny, fascinating and thought-provoking talks on the past, present and future of technology, economics, business, education, demographics and society. In his work, he's not stuck on the future and is always searching for that which has stood the test of time because those things have a real future ahead of them. He thinks fascinating forecasts are fun but they're too often deceptive. Thoughtful, long-term thinking is better - the sort of thinking that take us both forward and back through time.

If we can recognize the valid distinctions between fads, trends and principles, we'll find connections between strategic change and essential traditions. What to think about the future is not as important as learning how to think about the future. Dave's only had two real jobs: one at Johnson Controls and the other at Northwestern Mutual, both in the roles of environmental scanning and strategic planning. He also taught Future Studies in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Since 1987, he mostly sits and reads, studying trends, traditions and their implications. He gives about 50 talks a year and really wishes he would write more. He is the author of two books, so far ....

Dave is on the board of the American Institute of Architects and the board of the American Chesterton Society. Past activities include: Wisconsin Small Business Development Center Advisory Council, Community Advisory Board for public radio station WUWM, member of the downtown Rotary Club of Milwaukee, board member of the American Institute of Architects-Wisconsin, and chairman of the Goals for Greater Milwaukee 2000 Education Committee.
